»Overview
Kedarnath is one of the holy towns of Hindu pilgrims located at Rudraprayag of Uttarakhand district. It is one of the Char Dhams located in the Himalayas. The Kedarnath temple lies between the majestic snow-capped Garhwal Himalayan ranges. It is the best pilgrimage destination as these all four Dhams are spellbinding by the scenic beauty. The beautiful ambiance around the temple looks like heaven. This place is so peaceful to do meditation here. Thousands of tourists visit Kedarnath every year. It is one of the twelves Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. It is believed that this temple is built at the time of ‘Mahabharata’. After the Kurukshetra war, ‘Pandavas’ brothers came here to ask forgiveness for their sin of killing their brothers, ‘Kauravas’. The Pandavas then built this Kedarnath temple. The temple is the highest among the jyotirlingas. Kedarnath temple is open for only six months that are, May to November and in the other six months, it remains closed due to extreme weather condition. During these six months, the Palki of Kedarnath is carried down to Ukimath where diety is worshiped for the next six months. The residents of Kedarnath are shifted to village lying at lower altitudes. The announcement of opening and closing dates of Kedarnath Temple is on the occasion of ‘Mahashivratri’. ‘Badrinath-Kedarnath Samiti’ has announced these dates along with Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri Dham.
There are some other places near Kedarnath temple also that are Bhairavnath temple, Chorabari Tal, Shankaracharya Samadhi and HansKund. Kedarnath Temple is the major attraction and pilgrims in the tourists. Tourists have to book hotels in advance. Dharamshalas and rooms in the budget are also available there in Rs 500.
»How To Reach
Kedarnath cannot be reached by road only. We can reach there by climb from Gaurikund which is of 14 km. These 14 km trek is now of 21 km which is from Sonprayag. Ponies and horses are available on rent from Gaurikund otherwise you can trek by yourselves. There is a general health-checkup for the safety of the tourists at the time of registration. Kedarnath is strictly vegetarian area and consumption of the alcohol is prohibited here. There are some dhabas which provides some basic Indian food which is open from midnight at 4 am.
